The directory /tmp didn't have access for others to write to it. Also, the directory /var/tmp didn't have access either. Why are these directories set up this way? I switched them, but I don't know what problems this will cause in the future. Also, gcc doesn't produce a working executable for a hello world program under a non-root user, but root can compile and run it just fine.
