What besides =the JDK from Sun do I need to set up a basic Java development platform, =especially one supporting the awt classes ? You'll spend some time modifying the Sun's scripts. But that is not hard. I'd recommend you also install ``kaffe'' from FreeBSD's ports collection. It will run the same programs significantly faster (JIT is the buzz-word). kaffe is still no good for awt (although, they are wroking on it), but I use it for the javac ... =2) The Netscape browswer supports Java, but security considerations deny =the applets many features which the applet viewer allows. Should I even =bother obtaining Netscape as applet viewer ? Besides, what is the =standard HTML browser for FreeBSD ? I'm happy with lynx and an old =version of Mosaic, none of them has Java support. What's wrong with just ``java YOUR_CLASS.class'' ? =3) If Netscape is ok, are there any ports specifically for FreeBSD or =must I use the Linux port ? BSDI's (not BSDI2's!) version of Netscape works fine on my FreeBSD machines. -mi P.S. I did not try the JDK-1.1 yet. Only 1.0.2 ... -- "Windows for dummies"
