And I am gaining experience each time I reinstall. Obviously I am missing some minute key ingredient. The install programme has no problem recognising my equipment. I have also the The Complete FreeBSD, which I have read. The install as per the book seems to favour FreeBSD and DOS or just FreeBSD. The set-up is 3 hdds, two floppy drives, cdrom and floppy tape. On the 1st hdd and the third hdd I have linux installed. (no MSDOS). I alloted the entire 2nd hdd and half of the third to FreeBSD. Space is not a problem. I use lilo as boot loader. I have edited lilo.conf to include (in linux style i.e. /dev/hdc1 ) the location of the FreeBSD kernel image `kernel', etc. lilo does not recognise the kernel as a valid boot image. I have tried to mount the FreeBSD slices in linux but apparently i have not included ext2fs in my kernel compile. I have tried the various choices at the boot loader prompt in the FreeBSD install. Regardless of the choice it is not written to the MBR. So I will after an install have a done deal, but once it goes into reboot that's that. Now the questions are: 1) is there anywhere written the proper terminalogy/syntax to make lilo happy booting FreeBSD? 2) should i re-compile my linux kernel (linux-elf-1.2.13) to recognise ext2fs and work from there? 3) where do I find the written documentation to make a boot floppy for BSD. (understandably I cannot read the online documentation included in the distribution.) 4) should I move linux to the second hdd and install FreeBSd on the first? life is a learning experience.
