You should always state which release of FreeBSD you're running.

In 2.2.1 and late releases of 2.1.x, a new "swapfile" keyword entered
/etc/sysconfig which will direct the appropriate vnconfig/swapon
operations at the file of your choice.  Just create the file, edit
sysconfig and reboot.
