Yep, that's why someone stepped forward and *completely* re-wrote the
driver, basically from scratch.  Unfortunately, the changes were so
radical to not be able to easily back-port to 2.1.  Even the code in
2.2.1R was a bit buggy, but that has recently been fixed.

The only real solution I can tell you is to install 2.2.1 and then get
the latest fixes from releng22.freebsd.org (which is updated daily to
have the most recent bits.)

Sorry I don't have any good news for 2.1.*.
