There's a "how long to lose carrier before hanging up" register somewhere
on most modems (around S9 on USRs). This sometimes has a dumb default
like .05 of a second. If you up that, your "lost line" problem may
go away.
If the other side is dropping (or your line is soooo bad that it won't
stay up (snikker)), there's a new "set reconnect" directive in the
-current version of ppp that you may be interested in. I'll back-port
it to 2.2.whatevercomesnext when I'm sure there are no problems
with it.
