They are only similar to the extent that they are both essentially proxy agents. ppp -alias (and natd) strive to allow transparent access through a gateway from an un-registered LAN using only one real IP number. "Transparent" is the key bit. Socks supplies proxy services where the machines on your LAN ask the socks daemon to do stuff on their behalf and send back the results. ppp -alias and natd give you very little control.
