Jordan,

Thanks for the hint.  I actually got the two devices talking today-- on
the linux side, I had to route add -net default gw FREEBSDBOX in order for
it to route all packets through my BSD box.  This worked for about 2
minutes, and then I recieved "PLIP recieve error"'s on the linux side 
and the link froze up.  Any ideas what might be causing this and how to
fix it?  It seems like some sort of timeout problem...
