LPRng (Next Generation) is a superior replacement for the standard LPR/LPD utilities. The LPRng site distributes a set of printing filters that including one set that is an input (and output) filter for LaserJet printers that "talk" directly to the print engine (directly connected or TCP port 9100), with example printcap entries for it's use. As an additional benefit it will do page counting by direct communication with the LaserJet. LPRng's author (Patrick Powell) was to have uploaded the latest code to the "incoming" sites at FreeBSD, Linux, and NetBSD.
