It's syslogd.  Have a look in /etc/syslog.conf and you will see one
entry that writes to /dev/console and another two that write to root if
she's logged in.  You'll need to change these to get rid of the
messages, although I suspect that you'd be better off by simply not
logging in as root.  :-)
