Close, but VI stands for VIsual. (not VIsual editor)   Remember that it
was a visual mode addition to ex.  Curses was developed to support this
full screen addition to ex.

Rumor had it that Bill Joy had a multi-window, modeless version of vi;
but lost it in a PDP-11 disk crash and had no backup.
