It can put your screen in highres text mode (such as 1024x768 pixels) to display nice looking modes with a large number of rows&columns. vidcontrol just lets you choose some fixed modes, not any custom modes you might like (and that look good). Please correct me if I'm wrong. I especially like 100 columns and 40 lines.
