I have the same problem with USR sportster internal modem (33.6). In my case the keyboard locks up and the only way to control the machine is a hardware reset. I believe that there is some timing issue. And I am unable to initialize the modem S-Registers settings, since the system is goes **DEAD** after AT. (PS. My system is Gateway 2000 w/ 486 DX2-66 Intel Classic -R motherboard using a flash bios (latest version)) version from MICRO firmware)
