I ran into the same behavior at a customer site when I set up their
HP LJ5 printers. The following slightly-hacked printcap corrected
it for them. FreeBSD v2.0.5, Samba v1.19.5, LJ5 without postscript.

mx#0 - no max size - bitmap fonts from Windows print large spool files
sh - suppress burst headers
sf - suppress form feeds

lp|local line printer:\

:lp=/dev/lp:sd=/var/spool/output/lpd:lf=/var/log/lpd-errs:mx#0:sh:sf:
