Message-ID: <1993Jan8.050552.11116@ntuix.ntu.ac.sg> Sender: news@ntuix.ntu.ac.sg (USENET News System) Nntp-Posting-Host: ntrc25.ntrc.ntu.ac.sg Organization: Nanyang Technological University - Singapore X-Newsreader: TIN [version 1.1 PL6] Date: Fri, 8 Jan 1993 05:05:52 GMT Lines: 76 I've installed Joergs' Shared lib for /bin /sbin /usr/bin /usr/sbin for those small programs that benefit the most. The bigger programs do not benefit much. I tried to compile X utilities especially xterm but I cannot even find the sources despite having the X11r5 distribution. Which directory does xterm belong to? I'm cross-posting to comp.os.linux because there are a lot of misunderstanding about 386bsd there. I'm not against linux because it serves a niche market or use. Also as back up. 386bsd is much bigger and moves in different directions but it does not prevent people from porting lessons learned in linux to 386bsd. Joerg's shared lib is one of them. shared lib is not for everyone. It creates a lot of problems. I need it for a small system but I have lot of problems installing it but it may be worth installing the x utilities. From my benchmark the shared lib versions are slower than the unshared ones. Maybe it has to jump further? This is my unshared X directory. the X server does not need 3 megabytes. -rwsr-xr-x 2 root 1025428 Sep 30 21:52 X -rwsr-xr-x 2 root 1025428 Sep 30 21:52 X386 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 393216 Sep 30 21:52 appres -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24576 Sep 30 21:53 atobm -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 53248 Sep 30 21:50 bdftopcf -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 598016 Sep 30 21:53 bitmap -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 28672 Sep 30 21:53 bmtoa -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 937984 Sep 17 03:45 clock -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 577536 Sep 30 21:53 editres -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 45056 Sep 30 21:51 fsinfo -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 49152 Sep 30 21:51 fslsfonts -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 106496 Sep 30 21:51 fstobdf -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 172032 Sep 30 21:57 ico -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 32768 Sep 30 21:48 imake -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24576 Sep 30 21:52 kbd_mode -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 577536 Sep 30 21:53 listres -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 1541 Sep 30 21:58 lndir -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 32768 Sep 30 21:58 makedepend -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 118784 Sep 30 21:57 maze -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 912 Sep 30 21:58 mkdirhier -rwxr-xr-x -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 122880 Sep 30 21:55 xkill -rwsr-xr-x 1 root 446464 Sep 30 21:55 xload -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 434176 Sep 30 21:55 xlogo -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 94208 Sep 30 21:55 xlsatoms -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 98304 Sep 30 21:55 xlsclients -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 176128 Sep 30 21:55 xlsfonts -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 475136 Sep 30 21:55 xmag -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 569344 Sep 30 21:55 xman -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 593920 Sep 30 21:55 xmh -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 972 Sep 30 21:58 xmkmf -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 131072 Sep 30 21:56 xmodmap -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 1805 Sep 30 21:58 xon -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 159744 Sep 30 21:56 xpr -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 159744 Sep 30 21:56 xprop -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 110592 Sep 30 21:56 xrdb -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 155648 Sep 30 21:56 xrefresh -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 143360 Sep 30 21:56 xset -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 151552 Sep 30 21:56 xsetroot -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 139264 Sep 30 21:56 xstdcmap -rwsr-xr-x 1 root 565248 Sep 30 21:57 xterm -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 151552 Sep 30 21:57 xwd -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 163840 Sep 30 21:57 xwininfo -rwxr-xr-x 1 root 159744 Sep 30 21:57 xwud -- Othman bin Ahmad, School of EEE, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 2263.
