I just changed to jdk-1.1.1-linux-v3 and the graphics now works.
Thanks for the pointer!
(I also upgraded to FreeBSD 2.2.2 but I'm quite sure the fix is in the
jdk, the readme says "Version 3 fixes a bug where accept() would hang
until it was woken by a SIGIO."...)
