I assume your software routes the serial port through a socket which can be accessed from the local network and the COMt package creates a virtual serial port which is routed to the socket provided by the BSD box. This sounds as if the client could easily be a Macintosh using the Communications Toolbox TCP-tool (which is part of MacOS, btw). Hm, maybe I can put my modem on the BSD box again after all...
