$ l /dev/*mem
crw-r-----  1 root  kmem    2,   1 Feb 17 22:07 /dev/kmem
crw-r-----  1 root  kmem    2,   0 Feb 17 22:07 /dev/mem

Make yourself a member of group kmem.
