After installation using the original CD, X Windows functions properly. But when I have rebuilt the kernel using the original GENERIC come with the distribution and use that kernel, X Windows can only start properly for once. That means, X Windows can start and function properly just after reboot. If I quit the X Windows and start again, the display becomes unreadable. But the machine is not hanged anyway. It accept the key strokes ctrl+alt+backspace to kill the X Windows but the system doesn't returns to text mode but still unreadable. Even I can key in the shutdown command to shutdown the system and the screen keep on showing unreadable content after reboot. (Even I boot DOS after the error) The only remedy is to reset the whole system. Actually, I discovered the problem when I rebuilt a custom kernel for my machine. I derived the system configuration from GENERIC. I have only removed all the redundant drivers which are not applicable to my machine. When I have discovered the problem, I tried GENERIC and found the same problem. So the question is what is the different between GENERIC and the configuration file used to build the kernel came with Walnut Creek's CD? Or it there any different between the source code used to build the original kernel and on the CD? During the testing, I have only booted the system using different kernel and haven't changed any other configuration. I am using S3 Trio64V+ (i.e. 86C765). But it doesn't seems to be the problem of the display card as it works nearly perfect using the kernel came with the CD. Is there anybody can help and suggest solutions/remedies? Thank you very much in advance. Kiyo Kelvin Lee
