Plus a well respected friend is a big BSD advocate. I switched for one primary and still-strong reason: I have yet to crash a FreeBSD box while doing ordinary things (i.e. anything except trying to rewrite the partition table on the disk where / was mounted from.) Linux seemed to like to throw up its hands and die a lot.
