Yes, FreeBSD does run X based using the Xfree86 project. It works
wonderfully 
on my machine. I would, however, suggest (as with any X setup) that you
get a 
decent video card that is accelerated to make it "bearable".

You will find that FreeBSD has an equally wonderful web site at
www.freebsd.org. 
Also, if you would like to order the CD and books you do that at
www.cdrom.com.
I have found that the FreeBSD install is much nicer then the Linux one.
I have 
not done the Linux in a long time thought and I think that they changed
the install 
from three floppies to one, like FreeBSD. However, if you have a network
avaliable 
FreeBSD has a great FTP install.
