As the appended message indicates, there is some additional information
now available on the Digital Network Appliance Reference Design (aka
SHARK). The new info is reachable by the "hardware details" link
on our home page. It contains the complete hardware description
of the board -- schematics, wirelist, BOM, router files, Gerber,
PAL equations -- in short, everything you need to replicate the design.
What's still missing is the mechanical design for the enclosure and
the port of NetBSD. I believe that the mechanical design will be
released shortly, once some logistical issues are resolved. (Enclosures
have been fabricated and publicly shown, as you can see from the
photos on our home page.)
The OS port is awaiting integration with the mainline NetBSD/arm32
branch. I expect that this merge will be completed and released
to the public in early July. There is no technical roadblock to
the merge, just scheduling constraints on the people who must perform
it. At the moment we are working flat out to have everything ready
in time (and robust and in volume) for the domestic roll-out of SHARK
on June 24th in New York. The OS merge will be started immediately
after the show. Sorry for the delay, but the marketing constraints
are out of my control.
Folks may have gotten the wrong idea about when and from whom units
will be available for purchase, and I'd like to clarify that issue
right now. Digital has always intended that this design would be
public, and has always encouraged manufacturers to adopt the design
and customize it to suit their purposes. Digital has never committed
to producing the design in volume or for individual purchase.
Several manufacturers have committed to the design and we expect
more commitments in the near future. You should be seeing official
announcements about those commitments soon. I hope that units will
be available for individual or small volume purchase from our manufacturing
partners this fall, but I can't make any promises at this time.
If your organization would be interested in large-quantity, pilot
trials of Digital branded NCs you should get in touch with your local
Digital salesperson.
Cheers,
-Jay
