I know your frustration... had a bear of a time last night getting the
upgrade to work, having the same symptoms you describe (can run XF86Setup,
but when I try to startx, I got all kinds of strange error messages that I
had to 'ctrl-C' out of). *Then* I remembered to set a symbolic link to the
correct X server. I didn't see this in the documentation, though it's
probably buried there somewhere. Anyway, try going to the directory where
your X servers are sitting and set a symbolic link to the one you want to
use:

# ln -s whatever_server_you_use X

Worked with no problem after that! Well, no problem if you don't mention
having to get all my X prog's to work again. There's probably an easier way
than what I did, which was to simply pkg_delete most of them and re-build
them.

Sorry if this is too obvious an answer; I was proud of myself for thinking
of it last night!
