As a test installation it is only connected to one other machine using BNC,
each end of which is plugged directly into both machines. having had no
experience of BNC, is this wrong?

I'm almost certain that the IRQ is right..I have set the card to manual
configuration, I've set the IRQ and I/O address to match my kernel
configuration...(sound of hair being torn out....)     # :-(
