Your FreeBSD machine can be as "smart" as your "smart relay" host, so unless you have a real need to pass off mail to another mail server, just turn off the Smart Relay function within Sendmail, and your FreeBSD will do the remote mail delivery by itself (assuming that you have access to a DNS).
