I think the problem was if you had your CD-ROM as slave on
a controller that had no master, FreeBSD wouldn't detect it.
I don't know if that's still a problem.

You can always try booting from the install floppy.  When you
get the sysinstall menu, press PAUSE and PGUP to see the boot
messages - you'll see your CD-ROM mentioned if FreeBSD can
see it.
