Many thanks to those who replied.  It turned out that the configuration
utility, while it seems to do most everything else correctly,
set the "VideoRam" line in the device section to commented out.
That is, it was correctly set to the appropriate video memory
size that I specified, (different for the two cards I am working with), 
but, the line was commented out.  Apparently it assumes 1 MB by default.
So, by uncommenting "VideoRam    4096" in the Device section, 
it now works fine.
