To end this useless - in the sense , that it does not help to collect
a good list of unix acronyms -debate about acronyms:

when i choosed the subject i was thinking about abbreviations, all
these crazy shortnames, i could not understand.
maybe we could have avoided this whole debate about the name acronym
if i would have choosen abbreviations but i didn't, silly me :))

okay, the original theme is far away but perhaps we are able to get back:
lets get CLOSE to it again:

If you want to get a list of acronyms to add to:

try
ftp://rcs1.urz.tu-dresden.de/pub/soft/unix/comp.sources.misc/volume32/acronyms

there are over 5000 entries but all mixed up, not unix -specific!

my original posting about collecting a list has resultated in 138 entries
at http://cgibin.erols.com/derobert/cgi-bin/acronym.pl?search
not too much, but a good place to start at.

i would like to see another way of improving this collection.
perhaps it would help to have another cgi-script which only collects
unix acronyms/abbreviations without any explanations about the meaning:
whenever a special acronym *is* covered by someone,
then this very entry could be removed off this list.
so everyone is able to help, even if he has no knowledge about a special
meaning.

about the name of the tag at the cgi-script (see above) :

"LINUX & COMPUTER ACROYM INDEX" is not a good name for this cgi-script,
because there are enough
other unixes out there which should be covered , too.
It does not help to think in one unix-flavour only.
That is why i choosed to post to several newsgroups.

COMPUTER ACRONYM isn't what is useful either,
because then the whole thing is going to be a never ending subject.
It is difficult enough to get the topic again now, so i think,
UNIX ACRONYM INDEX is better for the cgi-script.

I wrote that i trembled when writing the first post about collecting a list,
because i felt this would cause huge traffic.
and it did.

I am very happy that so many people seem to be interested in the whole
subject because this way the goal of getting more entries in a list
can be achieved more easily.

For me the goal would be achieved if we had something like
the 4 parts in

ftp://rcs1.urz.tu-dresden.de/pub/soft/unix/comp.sources.misc/volume32/acronyms,

but very specific for unix -related stuff only.

I hope this *back to the topic* does help!
