It really probed the hardware, but basically only decided that it must have been a Hercules/MDA adapter if the probe failed. However, normally this shouldn't even crash your machine, since the region belonging to the MDA framebuffer was still mapped into the VM area (the entire ``ISA hole'' being mapped). I've only discovered about it since i wondered why a few of the vidcontrol's went through without a whisper, while only the font loading ones returned an error message (since only EGA/VGA supports loadable fonts). After re-reading the boot messages, i realized it assumed an MDA. Bah. Upon re-reading the CVS log, and reviewing the source, it's actually not yet fixed. I've suggested fixes to Søren and Kazu, but seems they eventually forgot about them, arguing where to actually put the probe best...
