Neither has any font named, 'default'. What > am I missing here? I had the same problem. Actually X is looking for a font named "Fixed". "Fixed" is aliased in the misc directory as 6x13, in the fonts.alias file. Why this error seems to crop up, seems to be that X is trying to set the path to "/usr/X386/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" in the font path, when Speedo doen't exist. When I took this path out and kept the "...fonts/misc/,...fonts/75dpi/" it ran.
