I haven't read the sources yet, but, by observation, "domain"
doesn't seem to work properly on 2.2.1 [I routinely run without
named on my desktop workstations, so I notice these things ;-) ].
If you have a 3-level name such as C.B.A or D.B.A,
you can't say x.C or y.D or whatever. However, it is a
trivial exercise to use the "search" keyword in resolv.conf
to do the same thing, so this isn't a big deal.

FWIW, if you have local nameservers on your network already,
desktop workstations (as opposed to "servers") can save a
process (and the memory it tends to consume) by not running
named. Unless you are running a network server of some kind,
you generally don't generate many names per second to resolve,
and even a modest system can be the domain nameserver for a
lot of desktop workstations without problems. [If your desktop
boxes have lots of memory, then forget it.]
