I have not seen a JDK for BSDI. The FreeBSD one didn't work for
me either.

I've been experimenting with Kaffe recently. See www.kaffe.org.

Kaffe is a java virtual machine. You can use it with JDK classes
to get the java compiler, etc. Do get the JDK classes from their
ftp site even if you have JDK for another platform already; there
appear to be makefiles or something that aren't in JDK.

I've had reasonable success with what I've tried so far with
these exceptions:

- the appletviewer doesn't work; I haven't a clue why not
- remember to unsetenv CLASSPATH before running netscape or it can't
  run any java
