If you dont need DOS on your system, then We could all benefit tremendously by implementing a DOS boostrap program for instance we could initialize vga cards at boot time and let vga manufucturers keep their propieratory way of programming their cards is just one of many examples. If this idea seems "ugly", just ask anyone having to deal with manufacturers who love to keep their hardware interface propieratory. In the case of the vga, it was just the setting the dot clock, hence partial initialization.
