It is planned that the next release will support more than 64k of memory for the mono server (on supported SVGA chipsets -- not with the "generic" driver). The mono mode that is used is really a 16-colour mode (but only using one of the 4 planes). This means that on a card with 256k only 64k will be usable. 512k is required to get 1024x768/1152x900, and 1600x1200 will need 1M. If you want a larger virtual screen, you can try one of the "virtual" window managers (tvtwm, olvwm, etc).
