I had a smiliar problem while installing ppp. At first I tried to do a manual connection. After entering term I could enter my AT commnds. They were send (the modem answered with OK) but i had to type them "blind" because they were not echoed on the screen. I than have given up to try to connect manually. I installed the conf files as described in PPPPP (Pedantic PPP Primer). This way it worked on the first try. This description was a good job.
