There are ways to get them to work.  With most of your current generation
NICs you disable PnP via the configuration diskette that comes with the
card and set the IRQ, port, etc. from the same utility.  WinNT doesn't
support PnP that well either which is why NIC's should be able to do it
both ways.  I know that the 3Com cards will work this way along with any of
your generic DEC 21140 based.  I suspect that SMC cards will work just as
well.
