Serious answer: what should we do?  And why?

You can compete with MS only by becoming MS; if Linux or FreeBSD ever did
that, would you or I want anything to do with them?  I can only answer for
myself, but I suspect that in these news groups we'd get a strong majority
"no" on that.  :-)

NT will take over what it will; Unix, by whatever name, will hold onto what
is controlled by technically savvy folks who can see a real advantage in
fighting to keep it so.  I fear that the latter will continue to shrink
slowly, at least in the US, as we turn out less of these from our colleges
and universities every year, and more and more half-trained idiots.  On
this, I will only gesture in the direction of

worthwhile thing on AOL.  I wouldn't have believed it either, but this one
resource just might justify that whole house of cards.  Mitchell is, alas,
still entirely relevant.

Short form: Unix will never be a mainstream OS... thank ghod!
