Alright, I have a Dell P100c and I've always had a similar - if not
identical - problem... that is, with every version of fbsd since 2.1.5.

When I boot the boot.flp floppy, everything goes well until either just
before the main blue menu screen is displayed or just after. Then the
keyboard locks and I'm screwed. The only way I can get past this is to
enter the BIOS setup (my BIOS is version A06) and disable the CDROM
which is
a 4x NEC ("273" I think). This obviously means that I can't install
from
CDROM so I'm left with one of the other install options. The last time,
I
copied a bunch of the CD to a DOS partition and installed a minimal
installation from that. Then, after I got it working, I used
/stand/sysinstall to install the rest from CD. That's right, the CD
works
fine after the install. I do it that way because some of the
installation
doesn't go so well from a DOS partition - especially X as I recall.

I hope this is similar to your problem. I can't understand why this
happens but I was getting very close to buying a new CD reader and
hoping
it fixes the hangup. I wouldn't know where to start if the problem is
rooted elsewhere.
