It just comes that way; whomever set it up had a group '10' on their
machine.  Most of us don't.  No biggie.  chgrp -R wheel /usr/X11 if it
bugs ya.

Sounds strange to me; i've got no such problems.

Did you try "passwd root"?  If that doesn't work, man pwd_mkdb(8).
