  ps -auwwx will print out as many bytes per process as needed.

  The Bat book says its used when processing the queue or delivering to a long
 list of recipients. By keeping a few smtp transport messages( in case another
 message is for the same destination ) improves outbound mail transfers. 

  Could you be running up against load average issues? QueueLA and RefuseLA
 set the load average at which mail is queued and refused.
