The problem I was having was do to a bogus clocks line in my Xconfig file (as dwex@cbnewsj.cb.att.com pointed out). By removing the 'clocks' line altogether and using the monitor timings Terry suggested, I was able to run the Prodesigner IIs and the NEC 3FGx at 1024x768. Unfortunately it won't handle > 60 HZ refresh rate at that resolution, so I'll be upgrading to the 4FG after all.
