I have a 2.2.2-RELEASE machine with an Adaptec 2940UW and
a WangDAT 3200 (SCSI ID 1) connected to it. When I try to
write something to the DAT (dump or tar), after some time
I get the following error message in the log:

st0(ahc0:1:0): HARDWARE FAILURE info:1 asc:15,1 Mechanical positioning error

The only command I can successfully execute is "mt rewind",
which returns almost immediately. I have tried two different
DAT tapes (both were brand new) and both didn't work.

I don't have a tape with some data on it so I can't check
if I'm able to read anything, but judging from the above message
and considering Murphy's law, everything is possible.

I was told this same DAT was working just fine in a Win95
machine, so I guess it is not really "HARDWARE FAILURE" that's
causing my problems.

If anybody has seen something like this and maybe even knows
how to fix it I would really much appreciate it. I'm really worried
about not having backups :(
