These are formatted floppies, both 3.5 and 5.25. I have duplicated the symptom on two machines (both 486s, one with IDE controller, other with SCSI only) and with two different kernels, namely the fixit disk and the current "rachel" kernel.) Also, the symptom is tame whether using 3.5 or 5.25 floppies. OK, enough background. Now on to the problem. It seems I can boot from a floppy, mount a floppy, dd to or from a floppy, but I can't disklabel a floppy. I give the command: disklabel -w 0r fd1a 5in "scratch" and I get the errors: disklabel: ioctl DIOCSDINFO: Device not configured ioctl DIOCWLABEL: Device not configured I'm assuming I'm doing something stupid, but I've checked the bug list, and the unofficial FAQ, and haven't found anything to help. Any ideas? Thanks, Kent Blackett blackett@bbn.com
