Sure enough!  I borrowed an external modem and plugged it into what I
thought was a dead serial port, then removed the internal modem.
That worked well enough, so I reconfigured the kernel with sio2 using irq 2
(not being used) and reset the jumpers likewise on the internal robotics
modem (as com3/irq 2).
Works just fine now.  Thanks for your help
