Both are outstandiong.  Linux has lots more documentation and
information available,  FreeBSD has better networking code, imo.
I use both, Linux for my workstation, FreeBSD for my net servers.
Since you are just starting out, I would say go with linux.
After you get a few months experiance, definatly try FreeBSD, and learn
the various differences in the OS's.
