The 1522 is a PIO-mode card, and if it's working for you I'd leave it alone. I'm using 3 of these cards in different FreeBSD machines, without troubles. Here in Portland you can buy a 486/133 PCI/ISA motherboard with CPU for about $120, and a ncr PCI scsi controller for $70, that would give you far better performance for only $30 more than any ISA scsi controller.
